Fortezza Castle
Built in 1573 on the hill of Palekastro, above ancient Rithymna, the Fortezza is one of the largest Venetian fortresses, with a 1,300-metre perimeter. Today it hosts exhibitions and summer festivals in the Erofili theatre.

Rethymno Beach
Golden sand and clear, shallow water beside the Venetian Port — the western end of a 13-kilometre beachfront. Loggerhead sea turtles nest here each summer, so some areas are gently roped off.

Arkadi Monastery
Twenty-three kilometres from Rethymno, on a plateau at 500 metres, Arkadi is a symbol of Cretan resistance and a European Freedom Monument, remembered for the events of 1866.
